WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a curious and insightful Process Engineer to help us continually optimize production.
This role will be based out of our Eastside Manufacturing Facility in Etobicoke.
WHAT YOU’D BE DOING IN THIS ROLE
Process Reliability
- Develop and implement process reliability systems (center lining, SMED, visual controls, autonomous maintenance, CIL, bulk changeover, 6S, Andon, Reliability Centered Maintenance, Poka Yoke, etc.)
- Identify and analyze downtimes, and develop solutions and control plans using tools such as 5 Whys, Statistics tools, Control Charts, Pareto, FMEA, DMAIC, Fault Tre Analysis, MTBF, MTTF, MTTR, etc.
- Build process capability and process control systems to reduce planned and unplanned downtime and Prepare process reliability reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data.
- Own and improve process data analytics for process monitoring, diagnostics, and optimization
- Lead Daily Direction Setting (DDS) Meetings for your lines or compounding area
- Identify and plan continuous improvement activities such as speed increase, batch cycle time reduction for compounding, minor stoppage reduction, scrap reduction, planned downtime reduction, and labor efficiency improvement
- Build capability and skills of line or compounding technicians to execute newly established standards (Cleaning Inspection Lubrication (CIL) in case of Autonomous Maintenance (AM) Pillar and Planned Maintenance (PM) Standards in case of Progressive Maintenance.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, Standard Operating Procedures, and OPL (One-Point-Lesson). Fully responsible for the training of the team.
- Explore new fields of technology (IoT, automation, robotics) to ensure that filling lines or compounding are equipped with the latest automation technology aligned with current and future business requirements of DECIEM
- Work closely with D365 Business Analysis team and Global Process Owners to improve the operational processes.
New Product Development / Technology Transfer & Validation (‘TT&V’)
- Provide technical support to TT&V and Engineering for all new launches regarding new processes or process changes, equipment and technology selection, validation of new process and equipment, definition and documentation of standards and specifications
- Define and defend from production point of view the project objectives, scope, value, and timeline for any NPD / NPL project
- Develop process validation plans, protocols, and process controls
- Conduct equipment and process trials. Collect and analyze data, generate reports summarizing the results of the trials
- Train and qualify line or compounding technicians for any new product, process and technology
- Work with Engineering to identify any key projects that help the lines or compounding area to achieve higher process reliability
- Lead installation and start-up of new equipment, including CQV (commissioning, qualification, verification)
- Validate technological choices for any new process and define associated maintenance plans for new equipment
- Support major capital initiatives, providing performance data analysis to ensure vertical start-up, and product and delivery standards are met
- Provide feedback to product designers on the suitability of designs for manufacturability
Quality
- Monitor processes in your area to ensure quality, and continuously promote quality the first time
- As a Subject Matter Expert (‘SME’) of equipment and process, lead the investigation in your area for any Quality Issue / Incident for sample collection, data collection, root cause analysis, writing the CAPA
- Owner of the QA-related documentation used in production (Batch Production Record, Master Batch Packaging Record)
- Provide training to the line or compounding technicians when there is a change or a new QA Procedure
- Work with QA and lead the validation for any changes in the process (bulk changeovers, line changeovers, batch cycle time reduction, etc.)
- Establish quality control guidelines for the production process
Safety
- Work closely with Environmental Health & Safety (‘EH&S’) to support all plant safety initiatives related to line or compounding processes. Participate in HAZOPs.
- Make sure that any equipment or process changes follow the proper Job Safety Assessment (JSA). Based on JSA, prepare Job Safe Practices (JSP) and train the technicians
- Ensure that line or compounding technicians follow all EH&S policies and enforce DECIEM policies for workplace safety and conduct regular safety audits
- Recommend and assess technology to improve safety
Sustainability
- Collaborate with sustainability to ensure that operational processes are designed and executed with minimum carbon footprint
- Support waste reductions initiatives such as Scrap/Water Programs, packaging waste reduction, energy efficiency
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED TO GET THE JOB DONE
- Hands-on, deeply engaged person who is process focused and has a track record of driving repeatable, measurable results. Action-oriented and always looking for ways to challenge the status quo.
- Relevant education (Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering) OR equivalent work experience in a progressive Manufacturing career management
- Proven analytical, problem-solving, problem-management, and conceptual skills, including the ability to make practical business decisions from assessing large amounts of data
- Self-starter with the ability to prioritize, take ownership, and deliver results against challenging performance indicators. A critical thinker and sound decision-maker with strict attention to detail
- Dedication to continuous improvement - Knowledge of statistics and process control tools and Integrated Lean Six Sigma Work Systems
- Strong coordination and project management skills with the ability to prioritize changing and conflicting demands, meet deadlines and stay productive under pressure. Experience in managing a diverse team in different cultures and providing outstanding mentorship, and development
- Strong leadership skills to nurture, grow and guide a relatively new team and teach them best operations practices to improve process reliability. Track record of inspiring teams to take ownership of their environments and the results they produce
- Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, etc. Experience working with ERP, WMS, and MES, with a demonstrated use of data from these systems to measure and drive business results. Microsoft D365 Finance & Operations ERP experience is an asset
- Knowledge of process automation equipment related to the cosmetics, personal care, or pharmaceutical industries is an asset
- Ability to travel up to 10%
